I've been a bit behind updating this LJ because of my participation in the Federation Rhetoric Symposium on Friday. It was incredible, and I have to read Deborah Brandt's work!
I want to post briefly about the Organization of Transformative Works (OTW): a non-profit organization formed a few years ago by fans to "pushback" against the many of the recent attempts by corporate entities to one, disallow creative and transformative works by fans, and, two, to corral fans into for profit sites (profit for the corporations).
There's a long complex history I won't go into, but OTW hosts the Fanlore wiki, and the Journal for Transformative Works and Cultures, an online peer-reviewed journal for scholarship on fan studies (I'm on the Board, and I'll be co-editing a special issue on Race and Fandom with Sarah Gatson which is due out in 2011).
OTW also has a blog, and here's a recent entry by Francesca Coppa on Fair Use and Vids, especially with regard to YouTube's policies.
